VFX for a Mythological Theatrical Performance
Live theatre VFX begins before the final shot reaches the studio. For Samudra Manthan, Spark VFX Studios first studied the rehearsal environment at National School of Drama to understand the performance rhythm, actor movement, stage blocking, and visual moments that needed digital support.
The team supported the production through shoot planning and limited shoot supervision, then worked with the filmed performance material. The on-screen mythological figures were performed and filmed, while Spark focused on VFX compositing, mythological background replacement, animated backdrops, and selected CGI environments.
As part of Spark VFX Studios work in Animation, CGI and VFX Production, the project became an example of event VFX for theatre: digital visuals that extend the stage world while respecting live performance at the center.
A mythological stage production gained cinematic depth through cosmic VFX backdrops built for live performance.

Challenges
Event VFX Production Challenge
The main challenge was understanding the theatrical performance before designing the visuals. Spark had to observe rehearsals, study actor movement, identify where digital backdrops were needed, and plan how filmed elements would later fit into the stage presentation.
The footage came from a live-performance context, so the VFX work needed to respect lighting, camera framing, costume silhouettes, and the emotional rhythm of each mythological moment. Backgrounds for Vishnu and Lakshmi, Shiva, and other divine scenes had to feel atmospheric without turning the production into a fully CG character piece.
The team also had to combine different production layers: shot footage, composited mythological environments, animated background movement, and one or two CGI environment builds. Everything needed to stay projection-ready for a theatrical show rather than behave like a standalone film sequence.
Objective

The objective was to support the live theatrical production with VFX backdrops and composited mythological environments that made the staged moments feel larger, clearer, and more immersive.

Our Process
Spark VFX Studios began by visiting rehearsals and observing how the performance was being staged. This helped the team understand where visual extensions would be useful, how shoots needed to be planned, and which moments required mythological background treatment.
After receiving the filmed performance shots from National School of Drama, Spark focused on compositing and visual extension. Mythological scenes featuring Vishnu, Lakshmi, Shiva, and related divine imagery were built from filmed performance material, then placed into designed mythological environments through background replacement, animation, and VFX treatment.
The team created animated backdrops, atmospheric effects, and limited 3D CGI environments to support the show. These visual layers were built for theatrical use, with attention to projection readability, pacing, visual depth, and continuity with the live performance language.
Event VFX Result and Theatrical Value
Samudra Manthan became a practical example of event VFX for theatre, where digital work supported live performance rather than replacing it.
Spark VFX Studios contribution included rehearsal study, shoot-planning support, selected shoot supervision, compositing, animated backdrops, mythological background replacement, and limited CGI environment creation. The final visual treatment helped extend the theatrical world around the filmed performance shots while keeping the actors and stage narrative central.
